Improving My Life In Six Weeks
Six weeks to improve my quality of life in six ways
Thursday, August 18, 2011
Day 1.....Hate diets.
Day 1, Here we go!
Wednesday, August 17, 2011
Here we go again!!
I took a week off and now I'm ready to go again! Making my goals public and actually completing some of them was such a good experience, I decided to make some new goals JUST so I can follow through on them :)
In the week since I last blogged, I have lost another 2 pounds, exercised almost every day, done virtually none of my diastasis exercises, had Ari in bed before 9:15 almost every night, Lilah has slept until 6am every night except one, and I haven't nursed Lilah even one time!
So here I am all ready to sign up for another set of challenges with the goal of improving my quality of life! There will be two key differences: I will be challenging myself to follow through for 12 weeks and I'll be reporting weekly rather than daily. So, here are the new goals:
1) Plan my families meals 1 week ahead
2) Improve Ari's eating habits
3) Stick to my budget
4) Follow the South Beach Diet
5) Exercise daily
6) Continue my diastasis rehab
I've also decided that for this challenge, I'll be reporting weekly rather than daily.
1) Pre-plan meals: Every day I wait until around 3pm to decide what to make for dinner. Not only is a pain in the butt, but since I never seem to have the ingredients, I end up running to the grocery store nearly every day. My goal is to pre-plan my meals one week in advance so I can cut down on my trips to the grocery store, follow my diet, and stick to my budget. For dinner we will have 2 vegetarian meals, 2 fish meals, and 1 chicken, 1 turkey and 1 red meat meals per week. I'm generally pretty happy with eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day, so that part should be easy.
2) Improve Ari's eating habits: Over the last year, we've allowed Ari to get into a number of bad habits. One was his bedtime issue which is now solved (thankyouverymuch), but another is his diet. Somewhere last yearAt this time, Ari eats no vegetables, fruits or real food of any kind. I've tried putting spinach in smoothies, sweet potato baby food in his MacNCheese, giving him dipping sauces of all kinds, but nothing seems to work. If it weren't for V-8 splash, my little man wouldn't get any veggies or fruits in his diet at all. For the past year now, all he eats is basically junk... a lot of cheese, crackers, pizza, chicken nuggets, french fries, MacNCheese, hot dogs, etc. He refuses chicken (?!?!?!), beef, pasta, veggies and fruits..... he won't even try, just looks at it and says, "I don't like it!" and pushes it away. Well, one of the things I've learned about parenting is that consistency is key. If he knows I'm not messing around at meals, he'll start following.... I hope. Apparently he eats all his meals at school, now it's time to start eating his meals at home. I'm tired of making a nice meal only for him to request a hot dog. My first step is to serve juice ONLY for meal times. Right now he wants to drink tons of juice and then isn't hungry for meals. I think of all my challenges, this is the one I'm most likely to fail.
3) Stick to my budget - For the last 16 months I've been on a budget and for 16 months I've overspent my budget. Each month, Lawrence gives me $1187. After student loans and my cell phone bill, I have about $1000 with which to pay for doctor co-pays, medication, food, gas for the car, clothes for the kids and myself, gifts and any other incidentals. Lawrence pays for all our gas, electric, cable, and any other fixed costs. At this time I have $298 left in my monthly allowance, $275 on my credit card, and 14 days left to the month. My goal is that by the end 12 weeks, I will have my credit card payed off and be within my monthly allowance so I will be able to start saving money for my own uses. Most of the time I feel like I can't spend $1 on myself because I have so many other things to pay for, but once I get filled to the brim with self pity I'll go spend $200 on myself (thus going over my budget)... because I deserve it!!! I think the heart of the problem is that I never had any real understanding of money and have never been able to exercise the self control to live within a budget. Well..... If I can take control of my finances, I should be able to actually pay all my bills AND have something leftover for myself. It's time to embrace financial responsibilty!! I'm hoping that pre-planning my meals with with help with my budgetting. I CAN DO THIS!!!!
4) Follow the South Beach Diet - In the previous 6 week challenge, I lost 4 pounds. Now it's time to step it up a notch. My Sister-In-Law recently sent me a book called "Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it" which was really an eye opener. I always felt that it's not just an issue of calories in/calories out, but rather that our bodies process different foods in different ways. This book had a LOT of different ideas about nutrition than anything I had really heard before. After reading (most) of the book, I've decided to adopt a low-carb diet. My goal is not only to lose weight, but also to model good eating habits for my children. I wanted to have a real lifestyle change which was sustainable with my crazy life. Since South Beach allows whole grains and fruits in addition to lots of veggies and meats (which are also good for growing children) I thought it was the best fit for my goals. The way South Beach works is that I have an "Intro" period of 2 weeks during which time I basically cut out ALL carbs including fruits and certain veggies. After the 2 week period, I re-introduce fruits and whole grains. I'm excited to plan out my meals for the next two weeks in accordance with the new diet. I've been 'practicing' the diet for the last few days and have already lost 2 pounds. Tomorrow will be my first official day on the diet and I feel ready.
5) Exercise daily - As I left the last challenge, I had finally started exercising on a regular basis, so I figured it's time to create an actual exercise regimen. I've decided on 3 days of cardio, 3 days of strength training. Monday, Wednesday & Friday I'll strength train, Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday I'll run 2-4 miles. Unfortunately, most of the races this season are already over, but I have the Warrior Dash in 3.5 weeks which I'll be training for. I took my stregth training regimen from http://www.strength-training-woman.com/strength-training-exercises.html. I took 2-4 exercises shown for Biceps, Chest, Hams & Glutes, Hip & Thigh, Quads, and Triceps. The whole work-out takes me about 1/2 hour. If anyone is interested in specifically what I'm doing, I will be happy to e-mail it to you.
6) Continue my diastasis rehab - I'm thrilled with the progress I made in my original challenge, but I still have a ways to go. Like I had previously stated, I'm not at the place where most other women start..... which means I can probably close my diastasis recti in another 6 weeks. I already lost nearly 5 inches off my waist and I'm ready to finish off a few more inches. For the first time in a long time I tried on a dress with a waist and it looked nice! The hard part will be continuing to wear the splint, but I'm excited to try to finish this off and really get my waist back :)
So, the way this is going to work is, today is my pre-start post. Tomorrow will be my day one and I will list out my upcoming meals, what Ari is eating, money for the week, exercise chart & diastasis chart. Then I'll update every Thursday. Wish me luck!!!!

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. - W.C.
Where has six weeks gone? It's been a crazy cross section of life with ups and downs, ear infections and vomiting, struggles and victories, and at the heart of the challenge was my desire to try to find myself again after having two beautiful babies. As a parent (especially as a stay at home mother), it's all too easy to give yourself over completely to the role and lose yourself in the ocean of your family's needs. This has been the beginning of my journey back to myself.
A friend e-mailed me the other day saying, "I can totally empathise with the daily struggles with food, weight, exercise etc and it was so comforting to me and I am sure many others to see that you (...) also deal with the same daily issues that so many of us face. What I am trying to say is that your blog made me feel much less alone in world!"
The truth of the matter is that I started this blog because I also felt 'alone in the world' as an overwhelmed and out of control mom with no one share my insanity. These last six weeks have been a personal journey to reestablish my identity as a woman, empower myself as a mother, and regain confidence in myself as a human being who has a say in the direction of my life. I am humbled and thankful for all of my friends and family who have followed me these past six weeks. In all honesty, it was the knowledge that people were actually reading this ridiculous blog 'thing' which forced me to keep accountable to myself and to forge ahead to the end.
Thank you :)
For those who have asked.... Yes, I'm going to take a few days off and then start on a whole new challenge. I may change it up, but at this time they will be:
1) Weight (of course!!!!!),
2) Diastasis rehab (I'll explain below),
3) Exercise (I'll be signing up for some races!),
4) Sticking to a budget (I still spend like I'm gainfully employed!!),
5) Pre-planning healthy meals for my family, and
6) Still figuring it out :)
So here's the final chart and the last assessment:
1) Lose 10 pounds - Not nearly my goal of 10, but still I'm proud to be under the 160 mark which hasn't happened in 2 years! I weighed in yesterday morning at 158.8. I still have about 18.8 pounds for my long term goal, but maybe I'll start focusing on 5 pounds at a time instead of 10!
2) Diastasis Rehab - I had my final meeting with Kelly Dean at the Tummy Team (www.thetummyteam.com) and I was REALLY happy with my results. In the beginning of this process, my waist was 40.5 inches!!! and my separation was 6 deep above, at, and below the belly button. Now after 6 weeks, my waist is 35.75 inches, and my separation is 3 medium above, 3 deep at, and 2 medium below my belly button! Woo-hoo! I've lost nearly FIVE full inches off my waist simply by doing these exercises for six weeks! I'm proud, but I'm also a little frustrated because after six weeks of hard work, my diastasis is the size of most other people who are just STARTING the program. I'm not really upset, but you can understand my annoyance - yes??? On the other hand, Kelly said if I really stick to it and work hard for just a little longer, she thinks I could probably close the diastasis in another 6 weeks.... so I'm going to try! er... that is... after taking a week off first :)
3) Exercise - I NEVER thought I'd say this, but I really missed running :) As you can see from the chart I've run 5 out of the last 7 days and it's been awesome. Luckily we're in Oregon summer where it's nice and sunny nearly every day :) Also, there's been a big improvement since my awesome neighbor lent me her single jogger... now I have NO excuse!! We'll see what happens when the rain comes back, but it's been pretty fun getting out there on the road again. I have JUST over a month before I run the Warrior Dash and now that I can actually jog over 1.5 miles w/o stopping I'm getting pretty excited about it. PLEASE check out the website and see what insanity I've agreed to sign up for :) If nothing else you'll have yourself a good chuckle imagining me wading across a mud pit or leaping over fire wearing a big furry hat with horns :) http://warriordash.com/
4) Ari bedtimeSupernanny would NOT have approved..... but now I'm in charge again, and I have no intention of relinquishing my power :)
5) Lilah sleep through the night - For the most part we're now officially down to one waking in the night which is pretty friggin awesome. However, on Monday night Lilah slept through the ENTIRE night. I couldn't believe it. She went to bed at 8:15 and slept straight through until 7am and I had NINE whole hours of sleep. I woke entirely of my own accord at 6:24am, made sure she was alive (she was), went downstairs to put up a pot of coffee and stood in my kitchen not knowing what to do next.
6) Wean Lilah - This is the one challenge, which I can honestly say: CHALLENGE COMPLETE!!!! It was so tough to do, but I always seem to underestimate the power of cold turkey. I need to do more things cold turkey because it SOO works! It feels nice to have my body back :) I think I'm going to keep it for at least a year or so before I get pregnant again :)
So that's it! All in all I'm pretty proud of myself. I think I've accomplished a lot and I'm pretty happy with the results. I know in life there are always new challenges and things are always changing, but I'm pretty satisfied with the improvements I've made to my life in the last six weeks. A very wise woman once told me, "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it." Well... I did.

Week 6, Day 5 - Part Deux & Backslide B-fest.
I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere I lost count of my days. I realized since today is Sunday, I'm writing about yesterday which is Saturday, which should be Day 5 because my Day 1 is always on Tuesdays. So.....today is Day 5 Part Deux - make sense?
It's nearly 9:30 and as I'm writing this, Ari just appeared in my doorway saying he's hungry, so I'm going to stick him back in bed.
Ok, gave him a granola bar and stuck him back in bed..... Yes, I already brushed his teeth, had him go potty, read him books and said goodnight, and he's waiting until this moment to announce his hunger.
So here I am writing about Week 6, Day 5 with a short two days left to my challenge and I'm falling apart. I'm supposed to be covering Saturday (yesterday), but I'm going to complain a bit about Sunday (today - Week 6, Day 6). For starters, instead of exercising I went to the Oregon Steam up today and whatever calories I might have possibly burned off frantically chasing after Lilah for 3 1/2 hours, I probably killed with a McChicken Sandwich (no mayo), an handful of fries (Ari, Lawrence and I shared a kid sized), and a corn dog (I had never had one and Lawrence said I should!). Also, I should add I didn't do ANY of my diastasis exercises, NOR did I even wear the F-ing splint today... I'm so sick of the damned splint!! It's all stretched out and it rides up and rolls over and I'm totally sick of it :( I know I have two days left, but I'm tiiiiiiired of wearing the friggin thing. And for the piece de resistance..... As I previously mentioned..... it's now 9:37 and Ari is STILL up :( Uggg...... And I guess I should mention what most of you have probably already guessed, I'm probably pmsing. Rather than cramps and backaches, I become annoyed, lazy and despondent. blech....
Well.... here's to accountability:
1) Lose 10 pounds - 159.6 this morning probably having to do with my 1.5 slices of pizza last night. Soooo... tired of dieting :(
2) Diastasis - I did 2 regular transverse contractions and that's it.
3) Exercise - I did a 2 mile run/walk, but it was terrible. As I was walking out the door Ari said he wanted to come with me, so I threw the kids in the jogger. Within 3/4 of a mile, Lilah threw her sippy out of the stroller, Ari got his foot caught in the gate crossing the MAX, the kids got into a fight because Lilah wanted Ari's bagel (she had her own, but wanted his), Ari had to pee, then they both needed more puffs in their snack tray. I had a good 1/4 mile of running and then Lilah screamed nearly the whole mile home. start STOP start STOP start STOP start STOP, my heart rate was getting whiplash.
4) Ari Bed - Ari had another late night with a 10pm bed time. We spent the afternoon at a really cool charity event for kids, so he didn't nap. Since there was so many fun things to do (and he did them all) he fell asleep 30 seconds AFTER we walked in the house. Since we couldn't wake him before 6:30pm (believe me we tried), he didn't go back to bed until 10.
5) Lilah sleep through the night - In possibly the only positive challenge-related events of the the day, Lilah woke once at 2:30 with a big poop and went right back to sleep after I changed her diaper. I can't remember the last time she had a nighttime poop, but she didn't need milk or anything other than a diaper change. Then she slept till 7 which was nice.
6) Wean Lilah - Still weaned.... Thank the Lord above.
Week 6, Day 5
1) Lose 10 pounds - 159.8 again this morning. I think I may just have to be satisfied with a 3.5 pounds weight loss :( I'm conflicted with two ideas. 1) I really thought that once I weaned Lilah, the weight would just 'fall' off, but it doesn't seem to be happening. 2) I'm exercising a lot more this week and I'm also thinking that muscle weights more than fat! right? I don't know.... All I know is that while I'm very proud of myself for all my other accomplishments over the last few weeks, I still feel down that I didn't lost those 10 pounds. I may have to re-up on this goal.
2) Diastasis Rehab - I only did 4 of my 6 contractions yesterday; 2 double splinted, 2 regular and no headlifts. The splint is also really annoying me. Kelly had originally told me the splint is only designed to last about 6 weeks and I'll probably have to buy a new one. I'll discuss it with her during out meeting this coming Tuesday because I'm getting tired of wearing this thing. I've literally been wearing it 23 hours a day for nearly 6 full weeks.
3) Exercise - Did a great 3 mile run/walk with BOTH kids in the stroller. Despite having 56 lbs of kid and 35 lbs of stroller, I still managed to run more than I have in a looooong time and it really felt great. That makes 3 times I've exercised this week and I already feel more energetic :)
4) Ari Bedtime - Ari skipped his nap again yesterday, so I was in bed asleep by 8:40.
5) Lilah sleep through the night - It's a good think Lilah is cute, because otherwise she would drive me completely crazy. She went to sleep around 8pm and slept until 4:38!!! That was pretty awesome, but then she wouldn't go back to sleep. I gave her some teething gel, a sippy cup, brought her to our bed, stuck her back in her bed..... she just wanted to run around and play. Finally around 6:30 she went back to sleep for a little while, but this is a whole new challenge which I hope passes with the teething. On the other hand, I was VERY happy to achieve a full 6 1/2 hours of sleep for myself :)
6) Wean Lilah - CHALLENGE COMPLETE - 5 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes and counting :)

Week 6, Day 4
Someone told me once that being a stay at home mom is 100x more exhausting with 1/4 of the stress - and it's so true. Every day is a new barrage of insanity with only nap times and meals to keep any sort of measure to what time of day it is. Since there are no weekends, sick or vacation days I often forget what day of the week it is. But.... enough of my musings...
1) Lost 10 pounds - HAH! I'm not doing very well at this challenge. I was up to 159.8 again this morning. I think I'm supposed to get my period soon (TMI?), which may account for the WHOLE extra pound, but I know it's more likely because I was nibbling on Lilah's leftover waffle, Ari's leftover MacNCheese, and some beeny cheesy dish. This whole process is going painfully slow...
2) Diastasis Rehab - I didn't even start my exercises until 8pm yesterday, but somehow I still got most of them done. I did only 1 double splinted, but 3 regulars and 5 head lifts. It's especially bad since I was totally talking about the program with another gal taking the class and was like, "yeah... I totally take the exercise regimen very seriously and do the full amount every day." I'm shocked my nose didn't start growing right then and there.
3) Exercise - Not so much again :( I had a 2 hour meeting in Vancouver yesterday and between the meeting and not having much sleep the night before, I didn't really have the umph to exercise. I figured I'm already on the plus side since I worked out twice this week..... so there.
4) Ari Bedtime - Ari had a freak 40 stomach flu which extended his bedtime to 10pm. From 7:30 to 8:10 last night, Ari vomited 4 times. He was doing fine and acting totally normal until, "Blaaaahhrgggg" all over the floor. When the next round came 10 minutes later, we thought it was a virus and braced ourselves for long night, but after another 2 rounds Ari looked up from his garbage can and said, "Apple Juice and [granola] bar, please." We were a bit surprised, but that was the last of the vomiting at 8:10! We kept him up until 10, just to make sure.
5) Lilah sleep through the night - Lilah slept until 4AM! A whopping 8.5 hours for her and 6 hours of beautiful undisrupted sleep for me! The not so great part is that it took me nearly an hour to get her BACK to sleep, but I looooooved me some 6 hours of sleepy time. I'm pretty sure it's the longest stretch yet. Now we'll see what tonight brings.
6) Lilah Weaned - Goal Accomplished. 4 days, 10 hours, 8 minutes and counting. Now if that involution would start.... that would be awesome. I've been nursing on only one side for so long, I have had a 'B' and a 'D' forever, but now with the engorgement, I'm pretty sure I have a 'B' and an 'F.'

Week 6, Day 3
Cutting to the chase today:
1) Lose 10 pounds - Glad the Timbers beat LA Galaxy, but my celebratory Pizza and Beer didn't help my weight :( I was at 169 this morning. Gotta get back on the horse!
2) Diastasis Rehab: Not as well as I should have. I did 2 Double splinted, 2 regular and 5 headlifts. The headlifts that gave me such annoyance before and now the easiest part of my regimen!!!
3) Exercise - YES! To Lilah out for a 3 mile run/walk. I can honestly say I ran more than a mile without stopping (except to wait for the crosswalks) and ran more than walked. Unfortunately, I decided to wait for Lilah to finish her nap and eat before we went out, so it was nearly noon when we left. It was really tough to run in the hot, hot sun, but I'm proud of myself for making it. Also a special shout out to my neighbor Kelley who lent me her single BOB.
4) Ari Bedtime - Last night was a Timbers game, so once again we weren't home until nearly 11, but he went RIGHT to bed as soon as we walked into the door :)
5) Lilah sleep through the night - Oy :/ Last night was a mixed bag. We got home from the game at 11, but I didn't manage to crawl into bed until 11:40, then Miss Lilah woke up at Midnight! Luckily, she just wanted a cuddle :) I held her in my arms for a few minutes until she drifted back to sleep and I just looked at her sweet face in the moonlight. At 2:30 she woke up again but she put herself back to sleep! A success!! But, unfortunately, I had already come downstairs to fetch a sippy of milk. It was nice to get back in bed, but I kicked myself a bit because I should have stayed in bed to begin with. She was up for the day at 5:45 which just about killed me, but she was technically only up once last night which was pretty good.
6) Lilah weaning - So it's been 3 days, 14 hours and 3 minutes since I weaned and I'm going to say it's official and LILAH IS WEANED!!!!!!! Last night during her midnight waking, she didn't even TRY to nurse :) So in 4 days when my little experiment is over (for now!) at least I can feel as though I succeeded in 1 goal. Wa-Hoo.
